Who is Sean McKendry; and why he matters.

The who

Sean William McKendry, from Lansing, Michigan; the 517. Son of John, a debate coach who taught him that the signed thing is the act, not the report of the act; the man whose lesson runs under every page here (meet the maker). Mr. Debate himself; he learned to argue fast and dense at sixteen and, in his own words, never left debate camp.

He retired at forty-two, on purpose, before the work could turn him into someone he'd have to apologize for. He has lived on very little, including a stretch in his own car; so when he argues for a floor under people, he is not guessing; he has stood on the bare ground and knows exactly where it is. He lives with bipolar, named here by his own hand; he knows the dark places, and his move is to reach toward help, not away from it. None of that is hidden, because hiding it would be the one thing this house forbids.

He is the misfit who leads with love; constitutionally incapable of telling you only what you want to hear (a feature, not a bug; he's the one who'd tell you the truth before the reporter does). He builds; hundreds of coined arguments, hundreds of pages, solo, in the open, at a speed one person should not be able to hold. He runs on faith, disability, a standing desk, and the public record. That is the whole toolkit, and the toolkit is the point.

His family has read a hard year as failure; the truer read is a man who knows the map of the floor because he's been on it, and who keeps getting up.

Why he matters

Because the one thing he can do that a polished résumé cannot is fail right and tell the truth in public (the failure is the qualification). Because he reaches the voters everyone else wrote off; the disabled, the young, the dismissed; not as a demographic to microtarget, but as people he is one of. Because he built the proof instead of promising it; the better candidate website already exists, live, cited, checkable. And because he is available to the highest ethos, not the highest bidder; money can rent his hours, but only a matching mission gets the whole man.
