The delight wing · sounds fake, is true · zero politics

Weird true facts.

The pure palate cleanser. Seven facts that sound made up and are completely real — each one checkable. The site usually hunts the opposite (things that sound true and aren’t); this room is the happy twin. Reality is stranger than the bluff, and it has receipts.

01An octopus has three hearts — and blue blood.

Two hearts pump blood through the gills; a third pumps it to the rest of the body. And the blood is blue, because octopuses carry oxygen with copper-based hemocyanin instead of the iron-based hemoglobin that makes ours red. Three hearts, blue blood, and (for good measure) nine brain-like clusters of neurons.

02Honey never spoils.

Archaeologists have opened 3,000-year-old pots of honey in Egyptian tombs and found it still edible. Its very low water content and natural acidity make it a place where bacteria simply can’t live. Sealed and kept dry, honey is effectively immortal food.

03A day on Venus is longer than its year.

Venus turns on its axis so slowly that one rotation takes about 243 Earth days, while a full trip around the Sun takes only about 225. So the planet finishes its year before it finishes a single day. (It also spins backwards, but let’s not overdo it.)

04Cleopatra lived closer to the Moon landing than to the pyramids.

The Great Pyramid was already about 2,500 years old when Cleopatra was born (around 69 BC). The 1969 Moon landing was only about 2,000 years after her. She’s mentally filed next to ancient Egypt, but in time she’s closer to Apollo 11 than to the tombs behind her.

05Sharks are older than trees.

Sharks have been swimming for roughly 450 million years; the first true trees showed up around 385 million years ago. Sharks predate trees, Saturn’s rings, and the North Star. They’ve outlasted several mass extinctions basically unchanged — the design was just right.

06Bananas are (very slightly) radioactive.

Bananas are rich in potassium, and a tiny fraction of natural potassium is the radioactive isotope potassium-40. The dose is harmless — so harmless that scientists half-jokingly measure small radiation exposures in “banana equivalent doses.” Your fruit bowl gently hums.

07Wombats make cube-shaped poop.

The wombat is the only known animal that produces cubic droppings. The last stretch of its intestine has alternating stiff and stretchy walls that mould the waste into little cubes — which, handily, don’t roll away when the wombat stacks them to mark territory. Evolution invented the cube for admin reasons.

Each is independently checkable; sources include Discover Wildlife (sharks vs. trees) and standard planetary and biology references (NASA on Venus’s rotation; marine-biology sources on octopus physiology). If any line here is ever off, that’s a retraction waiting to happen — tell us.

Reality doesn’t need to exaggerate; it’s already the weirdest thing in the room. That’s why the truth is worth the check.

A gentle footing (0g). No politics on this page. Every fact here was verified before it shipped; “sounds fake but true” is the honest mirror-image of the site’s usual hunt (“sounds true but fake”), and it only works if the receipts are real — so they are. Some figures are rounded (a shark’s ~450 million years, Venus’s ~243 days); the wonder survives the rounding. Catch an error and you’ve scored the house — that’s the game. The machine can list a hundred facts and can’t feel which are true. Only a human gets to be delighted — and to check. ;
