An open letter — to the Fox viewer, and to whoever just thought “that’s just TDS.”

I’m not writing to dunk on you. I mean that. If I open by calling you a cultist, I’ve already lost, and I’ve become the thing this whole site is against — someone who hands you a word so he doesn’t have to show you a record. So here’s a record instead.

To the Fox viewer: here is what the people you trusted said to each other, in writing, while they told you the opposite on the air. When Sidney Powell claimed on the network that voting machines flipped the election, Tucker Carlson texted Laura Ingraham: “Sidney Powell is lying by the way. I caught her. It’s insane.” Ingraham wrote back: “Sidney is a complete nut… Ditto with Rudy.” Sean Hannity said under oath about the fraud claim: “I did not believe it for one second.” The network paid $787.5 million rather than defend those claims in front of a jury, after a judge ruled they were false. That’s not me calling you a fool. That’s them — in their own words — treating your trust as a revenue stream. You deserved to know what they said when they thought you weren’t listening.

And to whoever waves off every criticism with “TDS”: that’s the same move in reverse — a word handed to you so you can skip the claim instead of checking it (an insult in a lab coat). One standard, or none.

Here’s the rule that frees you from all of it: anyone — left, right, a network, a nephew with a website — who hands you a label so you don’t have to read the record is doing the same thing to you. “Cult.” “TDS.” “Fake news.” “The machines flipped it.” The cure is the same for every one: check it yourself. Which is exactly what the rest of this page is for.

The actual checklist — and it’s not mine to score

“Cult” is a real subject with real scholarship, not just an insult. Two published frameworks are the standard tools. I’m listing them as questions to ask of any group — not as a scorecard I filled out for you. Run them on MAGA. Run them on a movement you love. Run them on this website. You score it.

Robert J. Lifton’s eight criteria of thought reform (1961)

From Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism. Ask, honestly, of any group:

  1. Milieu control — is information and who you talk to controlled, cutting you off from outside sources?
  2. Mystical manipulation — are “spontaneous” events actually staged to prove the leader’s special authority?
  3. Demand for purity — is the world split into all-good and all-evil, with constant pressure to conform?
  4. Confession — are doubts and sins expected to be confessed and used against you?
  5. Sacred science — is the doctrine treated as beyond all question, morally and scientifically total?
  6. Loading the language — are complex ideas crushed into thought-terminating clichés (a slogan that ends thinking)?
  7. Doctrine over person — must your own real experience be denied when it contradicts the doctrine?
  8. Dispensing of existence — does the group claim the right to decide who is a real, worthy human and who isn’t?

Steven Hassan’s BITE model

Undue influence works by controlling one or more of four things — and controlling one tends to drag the others along:

  • Behavior — where you go, what you do, who you associate with.
  • Information — what you’re allowed to read, and which sources are branded “the enemy.”
  • Thought — the loaded language, the ideas you’re not permitted to entertain.
  • Emotion — fear, guilt, and us-versus-them used to keep you in.

The steelman — kept hard, because the word is dangerous. “Cult” is wildly overused as a partisan slur, and that overuse is itself a form of the disease. Disagreeing with you is not cultism. Tens of millions of ordinary people hold these views for ordinary human reasons — family, faith, a job that left, a town that emptied, a real grievance a party finally spoke to. A checklist can describe dynamics; it cannot convict a person, and the honest cult scholars are compassionate toward members, who are not stupid and not evil — they are human beings inside a system of influence.

And the party-blind part that makes it fair: that checklist flags high-control dynamics anywhere — a fringe of the left, a workplace, a church, a startup, an actual cult. If you only ever run it on the other side, you’re not using a tool; you’re wearing a lab coat to sling an insult. Run it on your own side first. That’s the tell that you mean it.

The house hands you the tool. It will not hand you the verdict. That part was always yours.
