Out of hunger and ignorance, not out of malice™

The most forgiving true thing the house knows about people. Most of the harm that lands on you wasn't aimed at you — it came out of hunger (somebody reaching for what they needed and grabbing wrong) and ignorance (somebody who didn't know you well enough to give you what you actually asked for), not out of malice. It's the old razor with a heart added: don't attribute to evil what need and not-knowing already explain — and hunger is the word malice-hunters always skip, because a hungry person looks guilty from the outside. This isn't a pass for real cruelty (that exists, and it gets named); it's the devil's-advocate move turned toward the person in front of you: steelman their intent before you sentence it. It's why the house scores the record and never the soul — a record can be wrong, a soul is rarely evil, and telling the two apart is the whole art.
